With 73.9 mn Users, Now India Become Third In World's Largest Internet Population

After becoming the third largest smartphone market, now India with 73.9 million internet users, is the world's third largest Internet population, overtaking Japan but behind China and the US, according to research firm ComScore.

This puts the country just behind global leader China with 348.2 million users, and the United States with 191.4 million users, according to a ComScore study India Digital Future in Focus 2013 released on Thursday. India's online population growth was only second to Brazil, which posted a 37 percent increase to 62.1 million.

According to the study, about 75% of Internet users in India are under the age of 35, making it the youngest skewing online population among BRIC countries. Across all age and gender groups, Women between the ages of 35-44 are the heaviest internet users in the Indian market.

The study further says the Indian blogging audience has risen by 48% in the past year to 36 million visitors. About 26% of category traffic comes from mobile phones and tablets. About 54 million internet users in the country watch online videos on their computer, showing a 27% increase over the past year.

“Mobile phone based Internet usage is a key component of Indian Internet usage, and I’d say the recent growth is being driven by mobile Internet usage,” Nilotpal Chakravarti, spokesperson of the Internet and Mobile Association of India said. In addition, many Netizens were using dongles to access the Internet.
