There’s a trend going on right now among Android device manufacturers of releasing mobile devices that’s tougher than ordinary devices. You will now see smartphones that can survive being submerged underwater or being immune to dust. On the tablet front, Xplore Technologies has just released the RangerX which is a lightweight yet rugged Android tablet. The new lightweight device provides large storage capacity, a brilliant outdoor viewable display and is certified as being fully rugged, holding both IP65 and MIL-STD 810G ratings.

It also has been MIL-STD-810G certified which means it can withstand vehicle vibrations, blowing rain, dust and sand, salty fog, contamination by fluids, and solar radiation. It's reported capable of still operating after multiple drops from a height of 4 ft (1.2 m), can withstand 95 percent humidity, has an operating temperature range that runs from -20° C to 60° C (-4° F to 140° F), plus it can be hauled up to an altitude of 15,000 ft (4,572 m) and still allow you to check your appointments calendar when you get there.

The RangerX is just 0.85 in (2.2 cm) thin, and has a starting weight of 2.2 lb (0.99 kg). Xplore reckons that the tablet should offer up to 10 hours of use between charges of its user-replaceable 10,000 mAh battery. A 5 MP camera at the back and a 1.2 MP HD webcam to the front round off the specs. Prices start at US$1,349.

The electronics giant is getting ready for massive production of sapphire displays.  Speculation has been running rampant about Apple's plans for mobile devices with a sapphire screen and it is finally appear to be firming up on Thursday. Apple uses sapphire for the ID fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 5S The iPhone maker recently placed a large order with GT Advanced Technologies for furnaces and chambers used in making sapphire displays. According to 9to5Mac, GT Advanced has already received 518 furnace and chamber systems, which would let it build 103 million to 116 million 5-inch displays per year. A new fiber optic technology could increase Internet bandwidth capacity by sending data along light beams that twist like a tornado rather than move in a straight line,easing internet congestion and video streaming, scientists say.
