Apple preparing to release an iPhone phablet
SAN FRANCISCO — An Apple phablet? News agency Reuters is reporting that Apple may try its hand at a big screen iPhone, a format popularized by rival Samung.Samsung seems dead-set on constantly increasing the size of smartphone displays, but will Apple respond? Rumor has it that Apple is, indeed, going to enlarge the iPhone once again this year, but I’m not going to hold my breath. After all, Cupertino isn’t exactly known for its willingness to bow to outside pressures.
"Phablets" are so named because they are a cross between a phone and a tablet. Samsung's popular Galaxy Note II is an example.
"Apple is looking at introducing at least two bigger
iPhones next year — one with a 4.7 inch screen
and one with a 5.7-inch screen — said the sources,
including those in the supply chain in Asia. They
said suppliers have been approached with plans
for the larger screens, but noted it is still unclear
whether Apple will actually launch its flagship product
in the larger sizes."
On Monday, Apple unveiled a major redesign of its iOS software, which runs the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch but did not offer any early looks at new mobile hardware. The new iOS7 will be out this fall along with, presumably, a new iPhone.
